Abreast in a Boat

Recently, we had the good fortune to paddle in Vancouver, BC with members of the very first breast cancer survivor team, Abreast in a Boat. These ladies were involved in the initial study in 1996 that looked at how exercise affects lymphedema and the other side effects of cancer treatment. It’s now more than 20 years later, there are over 220 survivor teams worldwide and we owe so much gratitude to the ladies of ABAB, Dr. Don McKenzie and the other researchers who took on this mission. They turned the medical community on it’s head when they encouraged survivors to use their upper extremities in active exercise. Today, we know that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of recurrence by up to 40%. Keep your eyes open for the Silver Lining dragon boats on Salmon Lake. The Missoula ladies are spreading their wings! #exerciseismedicine
