Why do we paddle?
“Rest! Take it easy! Don’t push yourself! ” was the old advice that was given to breast cancer survivors, until….
….. 1996, Don McKenzie, MD, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, sought to test his hypothesis that engaging in a dragon boat training program would not increase the risk of lymphedema for breast cancer survivors and would actually improve their quality of life. Dr. McKenzie was right! His case study was one of the first to provide quantitative evidence suggesting that dragon boat racing and other forms of upper body exercise were safe and actually beneficial for individuals treated for breast cancer.
Since then, hundreds of breast cancer survivors around the world have formed dragon boat racing teams to train and race as a community. A growing body of evidence suggests that physical activity, community support and connection may actually improve survival for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
What is dragon Boat Racing?
Dragon boat racing began more than 2,000 years ago in China and eventually made its way to North America in the 1980s. Now considered the fastest growing team water sport in the world, it features sleek, slender boats decorated with dragon heads and propelled by 20 paddlers working in unison. The drummer beats out the pace, while a steer oarsperson guides the dragon boat on its course. Worldwide there are more than 200 dragon boat racing teams composed of breast cancer survivors. Silver Lining Foundation Montana is the first dragon boat racing team representing the great state of Montana.
